Digital speedometers are increasingly being used by companies to measure internet performance, but how they can improve performance is still unclear.
The new paper from the University of Exeter, published today in the journal Nature Communications, lays out a number of challenges in how digital speedometers work, and how they might be applied in the real world.
Digital speedometers measure a number that are based on an assumption that the computer is fast, and the sensors are faster than the computer’s ability to respond to data.
But the paper goes on to point out that the speedometer sensor itself is not fast enough, and that it needs to be more accurate to be effective.
“We need to improve the accuracy of the measurement and make the measurement a more reliable one,” says lead author of the paper, Dr Chris Williams, from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Exeter.
While it is still early days, Williams and his colleagues hope that the improvements in speedometer accuracy will lead to more accurate measurements in the future.
What does it mean for us?
The team has already made a number improvements to the speedometers in the lab.
First, they have incorporated a range of different sensor types into the sensor to ensure that the measurement can be taken over multiple data points.
Second, they also improved the algorithm used to calculate the speed of the computer that the sensors use.
Finally, they used data from the sensor itself to analyse how the sensors respond to different types of data, to understand the characteristics of the sensor and its response to data changes.
They found that, on average, the speed sensor is better than the speed controller in predicting the speed to be within a certain range.
For example, the digital speed sensor can be more precise in predicting a speed of 10.7kph, when compared to a controller that is more accurate in predicting 30kph.
It is also possible that the faster the controller, the more accurate the speed measurement will be, since it is more likely to be affected by changes in the data as it is being received.
However, it is clear that the accuracy and reliability of the speed sensors are still being tested.
The research is an example of the importance of using data to improve our understanding of the world around us.
